Millington Municipal School District Celebrates Second Consecutive Round of Strong Academic Performance Data

MMSD Earns Level 5 TVAAS Rating, TN’s Highest Rating for School Districts

Improvements in All Subjects & Grade Bands; Double-Digit Improvements in ELA & Math; Two Level 5 Schools & One Level 4 School

(Millington, Tenn.) – Millington Municipal School District (MMSD) has earned a Level 5 TVAAS rating, the Tennessee Department of Education’s highest rating for school districts. MMSD experienced growth in every subject and grade band, including double-digit improvements in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math, to  make the leap from a Level 1 in 2021 to a Level 5 this year.

“This is a testament to the commitment of our staff, students, families, and this community as a whole to work hard and achieve our best,” said Superintendent Bo Griffin. “After so much disruption and uncertainty in recent years, it could have been easy for people to lose faith. Our ‘One Millington’ motto is all about coming together to accomplish a goal, and that’s exactly why we can celebrate being a Level 5 district. We’re very proud.”

MMSD is beginning the school year with a lot of positive momentum. This news follows the release of TCAP scores in July, which showed that more students are meeting or exceeding the state’s expectations in nearly every tested subject and grade level.

“We are moving in the right direction, that’s for sure,” Superintendent Griffin said. “It’s important to acknowledge progress, but we are working hard to be better every day. We have high expectations for the year ahead, and our teachers and staff will have the support they need to help students be successful.”

TVAAS, or the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System, measures how much a student grows academically year over year. A Level 5 rating indicates strong evidence that students exceeded expectations for growth.

In addition to an overall Level 5 rating, MMSD earned a level 5 in Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Social Studies. There was also a double-digit increase in the percentage of students who met or exceeded expectations in both ELA (+12 percentage points) and Math (+10 percentage points). Additionally, Millington Intermediate School and Millington Central Middle/High School each earned a Level 5 rating, while Millington Primary School moved from a Level 1 to a Level 4.

Superintendent Griffin credited the practice of “data digs” as a major contributor to student growth. Teachers performed benchmark testing in all grades and subjects throughout the year and examined the results together after each test to identify opportunities for improvement and targeted supports for students. He also noted the district’s collaboration with Instruction Partners, which provided extra support for reading teachers at the Primary School, and investments in high school English textbooks. Strategic leadership changes at the school and central office levels were key as well, including three additional academic positions to support all schools.

Superintendent Griffin said Math and post-secondary readiness will be major focal points in 2022-23. The district is expanding its partnership with Instruction Partners to enhance instructional support for educators and school leaders and provide assistance with analyzing curriculum, assessments, and instructional practices. To strengthen college and career readiness, MMSD has added a new graduation coach position to work with students who are off track and provide credit recovery support and hired two additional teachers to focus on ACT Prep for juniors.

“We cannot be satisfied with one year of improvement,” Superintendent Griffin said. “We recognize there are some areas that need more attention, but we’re ready for that challenge and excited for the chance to take another big step forward this year.”
