I am writing to update you on the new guidance that the CDC has released and that MMSD will follow as it relates to quarantine periods for positive cases. Please remember to take every precaution possible to slow the spread of Covid19 as we gear up for a very successful second semester and Spring testing.

UPDATE: August 6, 2021
The Shelby County Health Department has issued a public health directive that goes into effect, Monday August 9th stating that masks be worn in all K-12 schools, preschools and daycares in the county. All employees and students of MMSD will be required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status while on school grounds. This decision was made as pediatric hospitalizations due to the coronavirus have risen and 1,100 Shelby County children have active cases of the virus, representing a fourth of the escalating active COVID-19 cases locally. The data in Shelby County on pediatric cases, which has been released over the last week to ten days, reflecting that children are now experiencing higher rates of severe outcomes if they contract the Delta variant of the virus. For the foregoing reasons, amended Health Order No. 24 was revised to state that effective August 9, 2021, masks are required in any indoor area of a K-12 grade school, pre-K school, or daycare facility.
UPDATE: December 21, 2020
Governor Bill Lee has executed Executive Order #70 in which many updates were release about gatherings and businesses. This Executive Order does not apply to schools. At this point, MMSD has worked closely with the Shelby County Health Department and is still on track to resume classes virtually on Monday, January 4, 2021 and then Hybrid students, who normally attend in person on Tuesday will return the next day, Tuesday, January 5, 2021 to in person instruction.

New COVID-19 Sports Guidance
The Governor has issued Executive Order No. 70, effective immediately and remaining in effect through January 19, 2021. Because of the significant increase in the incidence of COVID-19 infections in Tennessee, additional restrictions on who may attend interscholastic athletic practices and contests will be in place.
Unfortunately, large scale attendance by spectators and students must be curtailed. Doing so means that bands, pep bands, cheerleaders, and dance teams may not attend athletic contests while these restrictions remain in place. In accordance with the new Executive Order, the only attendees permitted at practices or games, in addition to the student-athletes on the team, are:
- Players’ parents or guardians and immediate household members;
- First Responders;
- Coaching and team personnel;
- School, game, and facility administrators;
- Athletics officials; and
- Media and athletic scouting personnel attending the event in their professional capacity.
Social distancing between persons from different households is required. While the Executive Order does not mandate the use of masks, the Governor has encouraged masks, and the TSSAA COVID-19 Sports Regulations provision regarding the use of masks remains.
These are minimum restrictions. Depending on particular school, facility, or community circumstances, school officials may require additional limitations on attendance.
The Governor’s office conferred with TSSAA about these restrictions. TSSAA concurs with Governor’s office that these restrictions represent the best means for us to continue providing interscholastic athletic participation opportunities to our student-athletes while also doing our part to curb the spread of the virus. We remain hopeful that we will soon begin to see a decline in the instances of infection and that our schools will soon be able to return to more normal operation of their athletic competition.

First, we would like to say thank you for the tenacity that the Community of Millington has shown in the shadow of such unrest and uncertainty. We appreciate you and know that this is a hard time. It is with a heavy heart that we want to inform you that based on Governor Bill Lee’s strong recommendation to close schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, Millington Municipal Schools’ buildings will remain closed until further notice, extending at least through the end of the current school year, May 22nd. Online optional resources will still be available, and teachers will continue to love on and communicate with our children remotely. We will send out communication soon as it relates to personal belongings left in the school buildings and the next steps for students and /or parents to return items like books, computers, etc. to the school when that juncture arrives. We know that this decision is far reaching and impacts all of Millington, so it was not arrived at lightly. We are doing our part to ensure that our kids and families stay healthy during this time.
We love our children and families and we miss you. Please stay well and practice social distancing so we can get through this sooner rather than later. As always, thank you for allowing us to serve you and your children!

This afternoon, Governor Bill Lee announced his recommendation for all school buildings to remain closed through Friday April 24, 2020. All Millington Municipal Schools buildings will remain closed until such time. We will continue to be vigilant in keeping our students and families safe during this challenging chapter. We are working diligently on instructional options moving forward and we will communicate this plan to you shortly. Although we are separated by location, we are unified in mind and spirit and that is what makes us #OneMillington.

The COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly evolving, and we have been closely monitoring the situation. After serious and considerable deliberation and input from many stakeholders, the six municipal Shelby County superintendents in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington have made the collective decision to cancel classes, extracurricular activities, and sporting events through the week following Spring Break.
At this time, we are closing schools through Friday, March 27th. This will provide opportunities for social distancing, thorough disinfection of schools and buses, and contingency planning in case prolonged closures are required at some point in the future. We ask that families do not simply view this as an extended Spring Break or additional vacation time. Families should heed the warnings of health experts and limit your social interactions during this time to prevent the spread of the virus.
Thank you for your support as we navigate this challenging situation. We will continue to seek the advice of health professionals as developments occur and make updates as necessary.
UPDATE: March 12, 2020
The six municipal Shelby County superintendents in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington are aware of the decision of Shelby County Schools to cancel classes starting Friday, March 13th through March 30th. At this time, neither the Shelby County Health Department nor the Tennessee Department of Education have made recommendations to close schools to contain the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19. As such, there are not plans to close municipal schools at this time, though the situation is fluid and we will make decisions on school closures as new information emerges. We will continue to consult with the Shelby County Health Department and the Tennessee Department of Education to make decisions that are in the best interest of our students and staff.
Millington Municipal Schools is continuing to keep close watch on the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Shelby County. Handwashing is the first line of defense in preventing the spread of any virus. Please see the following information from the State of Tennessee.
